Public Notice and Known Studio are pleased to present “Shaky Town”, a group show featuring the works of Justin Guthrie, Nathan See, and Thomas Macie. The exhibition is on view through May 30, 2024.
To brand a town with a nickname is to give it an identity known to all – The Big Apple, Sin City, Motor City, The Big Easy. Los Angeles, known as The City of Angels to most, garnered a lesser known nickname in the 1980s: Shaky Town. The name references not only the San Andreas quakes in the area, but also the questionable “shaky politics” of the city and, while it hasn’t maintained as much notoriety as The City of Angels, it certainly has kept its legitimacy. A city with as vast a footprint as Los Angeles allows space for all different walks of life to exist in the in-between, unregulated spaces. This colliding of beings, over time, creates an urban mythology and this mythology is the jumping off point for works by Guthrie, See, and Macie.
