Chez Coronado is pleased to present Dominick Vanderlip “Soft Things”, an exhibition of paintings and drawings. The exhibition is on view through February 23, 2024 by appointment.
The exhibition title “Soft Things” stems directly from Dominick Vanderlip’s relationship with the canvas. His work is underlaid with imagery of domestic interiors from a past body of work and then covered over with a new, gentler, more natural image - flowers. Conflating visuals from the past with the present flattens time, allowing Vanderlip to use the canvas as a space for his own meditation and thought. What the viewer sees on the on the wall is an act of remembrance and of moving on. A mourning of sorts, but also a self-soothing celebration, one that is scattered through with imagery of florals, rain, checkerboards, and stripes. The relationship between the positive and the negative becomes co-dependent, as the image that is the underpinning often becomes that which creates the frame for the joyful overlay. Flowers sprout from the cracks in the floorboards, growth is abundant.
