Joachim Castañeda’s newest presentation of work and first solo show with the gallery moves from the wall to the floor. As the viewer enters the gallery their attention is drawn toward the center of the room rather than outward toward the walls. This diversion from the usual gallery experience is where Castañeda’s commentary on how attention is placed in our present culture, what is capturing it, and for why, begins. Attention : Attention herds the viewer through the space, inviting them to circle the structure at the center of the room and take their time with looking at each detail of the sculpture, trying to find significant meaning in the serendipitous objects it is made up of. The more the viewer circles the structure, the more it becomes apparent that there is no greater depth beyond its surface value, leaving them merely “scrolling” through the multitudes of content held within the rectangular artwork. The work becomes a similitude of a cell phone, a box holding endless content without meaning - form without substance.
